Family Fun On A Dime

Military Deals & Discounts

Military families endure a lot on a day to day basis.  Many military members do not work a simple 9-5 job.  They often work long hours (sometimes doing a thankless job), endure separation from their loved ones (quite often being sent to places normal people would never want to go), and usually live the life of a nomad (most do not have "forever homes" until they retire).  Though the military is paid, members volunteer for this job.  Freedom is not free.  If you happen to cross paths with a service-member, please thank them for the job they do of protecting you and your country.  Many establishments show their support and thanks by offering a military discount.

Ways to Save

There are lots of ways to save if you are a member of the armed services.  Some may already be known to you, some may not be....especially if you are new to the military.
-DIY Projects - Most bases have an auto and a wood shop available for your use.  Some are free, some have a nominal fee associated with them.  There is also sometimes a hobby shop where they offer a variety of classes at reasonable rates.
-ITT - Information, Tickets, & Tours.  A base travel agency if you will.  They offer discount tickets for local sporting events, amusement parks, shows, and the like.  They also often plan group trips to various places throughout the year at a great rate, so check there often!
-Outdoor Rec. - Having a birthday party and need to rent a bounce house?  Need a tent to camp in your backyard with the kiddos?  Need to rent a scaffold to paint your house?  Want to rent a boat or RV for a weekend trip?  Outdoor recreation has a wide variety of rentals, often much less than "on the economy".  *Please note that the items Outdoor Rec. has to offer varies from base to base* They also sometimes offer group trips or adventures at a discounted rate.
-Rosetta Stone - Learn a new language through your base.  Many (not all) bases offer access to the Rosetta Stone Language Learning System.  Contact your education office or your base library to find out if your base participates.
-College Tuition - There are scholarships available for military and their dependents.  All you have to do is look for them.  Also, the Post 9/11 GI Bill is a great offer for active military.  Under this program, the military member may transfer his/her benefits to any or all of their dependents.
