Family Fun On A Dime

Pre-School Information

The state of Georgia offers a free pre-school program available in many public schools and even in some day care centers, funded by the GA Lottery.  However, space is limited and selection is a lottery system.  You must have an address in the area to register for the program.  Registration is usually sometime in March, and letters announcing the children selected to the program are sent out in April.
There are several private pre-schools in the area and many are very reasonably priced.  Most open to the public for registration in early March.  A local address is not necessary if you are moving to the area, and most are happy to refund your registration/book fee if are military and your oders change.  The available spaces in these programs do fill up quickly, especially in mid-April when the free pre-school lottery is announced.  Some of the private schools in the area are:
Central Baptist Church/Sonshine Pre-school
Second Baptist Church Pre-school
Christ United Methodist Church Pre-School
Shirley Hills Baptist Church / Little Learning Depot Pre-School
Trinity United Methodist Church - This site does not have a lot of information about their pre-school program, but it does provide contact information for the children's ministries director.
Sacred Heart Catholic School
Harmony Community Church (This is a new program...supposed to start for the 2011/12 school year.  Based on the same program as Central Baptist Pre-school, but they are not related)
Middle GA Technical College Child Development Program
Houston County High School - No web site, but you can look up the high school and call them directly.  They offer a VERY inexpensive program for 3 year olds, but it fills up fast, so call early in the year.

School Resources

www.greatschools.org  rates the school based on reviews from people in the community and gives test score percentages as well as teacher information (degree % and such).  I think it also gives demographics information as well.
http://www.publicschoolreview.com/public_schools/stateid/GA is also a good resource.  It also provides demographics and information.
Houston County - Some popular schools (I am listing primary and elementary schools here as that is what my experience is with) in the area are Lake Joy Primary (Pre K-Grade 2) and it is right next to Lake Joy Elementary (Grades 3-5).
Perdue Primary and Elementary are also very popular.  I know quite a few people who have children there and they LOVE it.  I have also heard good things about Quail Run.  I Matt Arthur in Kathleen also has a good reputation.
There is a zoning map (as well as other info) on Houston County Board of Education's web site: http://www.hcbe.net/.

Peach County - I don't know much about specific schools in Peach Co., but I do know people who attend school in that county.  Peach Co. has a 4 day school week.  They go Tuesday-Friday.  It is a slightly longer school day, but it seems to work well for everyone involved.  Since they went to the 4 day week, test scores and graduation rates have gone up and the school system has also saved a lot of money.
